How to Apply Iron On Transfers
Application instructions explain how to heat-press or iron on a DTF transfer onto fabric for a permanent, wash-resistant bond. Follow the steps below for the correct temperature, pressure, and timing - whether you are using a professional heat press or a household iron at home.
Method 1: Heat Press
Recommended for professional and high-volume use. Gives the most consistent results.

Prepare Your Garment
Ensure your garment is clean and free from wrinkles. Pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds to remove any moisture and smooth the surface. This ensures optimal adhesion.
Position the Transfer
Place the transfer face-down on your garment in the desired position. The printed design should be touching the fabric. Make sure it is straight and centred before pressing.
Heat Press
Set your heat press to 150°C (300°F). Close the press with firm, even pressure for 10 seconds. Ensure the entire transfer area receives consistent heat and pressure.
Peel Hot or Cold
Open the press and carefully peel the PET film. You can peel while hot or wait until cold - both work well. Peel slowly and steadily at a 45-degree angle. If any part lifts, re-press for a few seconds.
Final Press
Place a sheet of parchment paper or Teflon sheet over the transfer. Press again for 5 seconds at the same temperature. This sets the transfer and gives it a smooth, professional finish.
Method 2: Household Iron
Perfect for home use - no special equipment needed. Many of our customers achieve great results with a regular iron.

Prepare Your Surface
Place your garment on a hard, flat surface such as a table or wooden board. Do not use an ironing board - it is too soft and absorbs pressure, which can prevent proper adhesion.

Pre-iron the garment to remove any wrinkles and moisture. This creates a smooth, dry surface for the transfer to bond to.
Position & Iron On
Place the transfer face-down on the fabric. Cover with parchment paper. Set your iron to around 150°C (usually the medium setting - check your iron's user manual) and turn off steam completely. Press firmly and move the iron slowly across the transfer, ensuring every part receives at least 10 seconds of firm pressure. Use your body weight to press down hard.
Peel Cold
Let the transfer cool for 2-3 minutes. Once completely cool, peel the film slowly and steadily at a 45-degree angle. If any area lifts, place the film back down and iron over that area again.
Seal the Transfer
Cover the transfer with parchment paper and press firmly with your iron for another 10 seconds. This seals the transfer and gives it a smooth, durable finish.
Wash & Care Instructions
Proper care ensures your iron on transfers last 50+ washes:
- Turn garments inside out before washing
- Wash at 30°C (86°F) on a gentle cycle
- Do not bleach or use harsh detergents
- Avoid tumble drying on high heat - air dry or low heat only
- Do not iron directly on the printed transfer
- Do not dry clean
Troubleshooting
Transfer peeling or lifting (heat press)
Increase pressure on your heat press and ensure the temperature reaches at least 160°C. Pre-pressing the garment to remove moisture can also help.
Transfer not sticking with an iron
Make sure you are using a hard, flat surface - not an ironing board. Apply more body weight for pressure and ensure your iron is set to around 150°C (usually the medium setting - check your iron's manual). Turn off steam completely. Move the iron slowly and make sure every part of the transfer gets at least 10 seconds of firm pressure.
Dull or faded colours
This usually indicates the temperature is too low. For a heat press, verify calibration and increase by 5°C increments. For an iron, try a slightly higher setting and ensure you are pressing for long enough on each area.
Film sticking to transfer
Both hot peel and cold peel work well with a heat press. When using a household iron, we recommend cold peel - wait until completely cool before peeling.
