Turn Any Photo Into a Custom Iron-On Transfer

A photo iron-on transfer is a printed copy of a photograph applied to fabric using heat. DTF Owl produces photo iron-on transfers from any JPG, PNG, HEIC (iPhone), or TIFF photo at 300+ DPI, in full CMYK with a white ink layer for accurate skin tones on dark fabrics, delivered to your door from £2.99 per A5 sheet within 1-2 working days UK.

Why Print Photos Onto Fabric?

Photo transfers turn a digital image into something physical and wearable. A framed photo sits on a shelf. A photo on a t-shirt goes everywhere with you. For gifts, memorials, fundraisers, and personal keepsakes, printing a photo onto fabric creates something that generic shop-bought items cannot replicate.

The challenge with photo printing on fabric has always been colour accuracy - particularly skin tones. Cheap transfer methods wash out colours, especially on dark garments where there is no white base to print onto. Our DTF process prints a white ink layer first, then layers CMYK colour on top. The result is accurate skin tones, vivid colours, and sharp detail on light and dark fabric colours, including black.

You do not need design skills, special software, or a heat press. Upload your photo straight from your phone or computer. We print it and post it to you. You iron it on at home.

Popular Photo Transfer Ideas

Photo iron-on transfers make personal, meaningful gifts for any occasion

Pet Photo Transfers

Print your dog, cat, or any pet onto a t-shirt, hoodie, or tote bag. A popular gift for animal lovers and a lasting way to keep a favourite photo close.

Wedding & Anniversary Photos

Transfer a wedding photo onto a cushion cover, a framed fabric print, or matching t-shirts for an anniversary. Skin tones and venue colours come through accurately thanks to the CMYK + white ink process.

Memorial Transfers

Create memorial t-shirts, charity walk vests, or keepsake fabric prints to honour a loved one. We handle photographs with care and print at the highest quality our equipment allows.

Baby & Family Photos

Print baby scan images, first birthday photos, or family portraits onto onesies, bibs, blankets, and clothing for grandparents. A personal gift that shop-bought items cannot match.

Father's Day & Mother's Day

A photo of the kids on a t-shirt, a family snapshot on a tote bag, or a childhood photo printed onto a cushion. Photo transfers make genuinely personal gifts at a fraction of personalised-gift-shop prices.

Holiday & Travel Photos

Turn a favourite holiday photo into wearable art. Sunset shots, landmark photos, or group travel pictures work particularly well as large prints on hoodies and sweatshirts.

How to Prepare Your Photo for Printing

Getting a great photo transfer starts with a good source image. Here is what to keep in mind.

Good photo sources

  • Photos taken with a smartphone camera (12MP or higher)
  • DSLR or mirrorless camera photos
  • High-resolution scans of printed photographs
  • PNG files with transparent backgrounds
  • iPhone HEIC photos (converted automatically)

Photo sources to avoid

  • Screenshots from social media (compressed, low resolution)
  • Heavily cropped photos (not enough pixels left)
  • WhatsApp or Messenger photos (auto-compressed)
  • Thumbnail images from websites
  • Photos taken in very low light (noise prints poorly)

Not sure about your photo quality?

Upload it and our system will flag any resolution issues before you pay. If your photo is slightly below ideal resolution, we offer an AI upscaling add-on that can improve image quality. If the background is distracting, our background removal add-on isolates your subject for a cleaner print.

Best Fabrics for Photo Transfers

Photo transfers work on many iron-safe fabrics, but some give sharper results than others. Smooth, tightly woven fabrics reproduce photographic detail best. Heavily textured fabrics (thick fleece, towelling, knitted wool) can cause detail loss in fine areas like facial features.

Photo Iron-On Transfer FAQs

What photo formats do you accept?

We accept JPG, PNG, HEIC (iPhone photos), TIFF, BMP, WebP, SVG, and PDF files up to 300MB. The most common format is JPG from a smartphone camera, which works perfectly. HEIC files from iPhones are converted automatically - no need to change anything on your end.

What resolution does my photo need to be?

For the best results, your photo should be at least 300 DPI at the size you want to print. In practical terms, any photo taken with a modern smartphone (12 megapixels or higher) will print clearly up to A4 size. Photos downloaded from social media, screenshots, or heavily cropped images are often too low resolution and may look pixelated when printed. If your image is borderline, we offer an AI upscaling add-on that can improve quality.

Will my photo look right on a dark-coloured garment?

Yes. We print a white ink base layer underneath your photo, which means colours appear accurate on light and dark fabric colours, including black, navy, and red. Without this white layer (which cheaper transfer methods lack), photos on dark fabrics look washed out or invisible. Our DTF process handles this automatically.

Can you remove the background from my photo?

Yes. We offer background removal as an add-on during checkout. This is useful when you want to print just the subject (a person, pet, or object) without the surrounding background. The result is a clean cutout that prints without a rectangular border.

How do photo transfers compare to photo printing services at high-street shops?

High-street photo printing services (like those at Boots or Snappy Snaps) typically use sublimation, which only works on white polyester items. Our DTF photo transfers work on many iron-safe fabrics and on light or dark colours. The print quality is comparable, but you have far more flexibility in what you can print onto. We also have no minimum order and dispatch within 1-2 working days.

Will the photo crack or fade after washing?

No. Our photo transfers last 50+ washes without cracking, peeling, or fading when applied correctly. Wash the garment inside-out at 30°C and avoid tumble drying on high heat. The colours remain vibrant wash after wash.

Can I print a photo onto a cushion cover or bag?

Yes. Our photo transfers work on fabrics and fibrous materials that can tolerate 140-150°C heat, including t-shirts, hoodies, cushion covers, tote bags, canvas bags, aprons, baby grows, and more. The application process is the same for all suitable items: press with heat, peel the film, done.
