What Is a Printed Iron-On Patch?
A printed iron-on patch is a fabric-ready design produced using professional DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing. Your artwork is printed in full CMYK colour with a white ink base layer onto specialist PET film, then coated with a heat-activated adhesive. When you press the patch onto fabric with heat, the adhesive melts and bonds the printed design permanently to the garment.
The process is fundamentally different from embroidery. Embroidered patches are stitched from coloured thread onto a woven backing, which gives them a distinctive raised texture but limits you to roughly 6-8 thread colours per design. Gradients, photographs, and fine text are either impossible or prohibitively expensive with embroidery. Printed patches have none of these restrictions - if you can see it on screen, we can print it.
Woven patches sit between the two. They use a finer thread weave than embroidery, allowing slightly more detail, but still cannot reproduce photographic images or unlimited colour blends. For complex artwork, full-colour logos, or anything involving a photograph, printed DTF patches are the practical choice.

How to Apply Iron-On Patches
With a Household Iron
- 1.Place garment on a hard, flat surface. Ironing boards flex too much - use a table or kitchen worktop with a folded towel underneath.
- 2.Position the patch face-down where you want it. Cover with parchment paper (not greaseproof paper).
- 3.Set iron to around 150°C (medium heat), steam off. Press firmly and move slowly across the patch - at least 10-15 seconds per area.
- 4.Let cool for 30 seconds. Peel the clear film away slowly. If any corner lifts, re-press that area for another 10 seconds.
With a Heat Press
- 1.Pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- 2.Position patch face-down on the garment.
- 3.Press at 150°C for 10 seconds with firm, even pressure.
- 4.Peel hot or cold (both work), then re-press through parchment for 5 seconds to seal the edges.

Are your iron-on patches the same as embroidered patches?
No. Our patches are printed, not embroidered. Traditional embroidered patches use stitched thread on a backing fabric, which limits colour count (typically 6-8 colours) and fine detail. Our printed iron-on patches use DTF (Direct-to-Film) technology to reproduce any design in unlimited colours, including gradients, photographs, and fine text. The result looks different from embroidery - it is a smooth, printed surface rather than a textured stitched surface. If you specifically need the raised-thread look of embroidery, our patches are not the right choice. If you want full-colour reproduction, photographic detail, or complex artwork at a fraction of the embroidery cost, they are ideal.
How durable are printed iron-on patches?
When applied correctly, our iron-on patches last 50+ washes without cracking, peeling, or fading. Wash garments inside-out at 30°C on a gentle cycle and avoid tumble drying on high heat. The adhesive bonds permanently to fabric fibres during the heat application process.
Can I sew these patches on instead of ironing them?
Yes. You can iron the patch on first for a secure bond, then sew around the edges for extra durability. This is a popular approach for workwear and items that get heavy use. You can also sew them on without ironing, though the iron-on adhesive gives the cleanest finish.
What size patches can I order?
You choose the exact size of your patch when you upload your design. Our sheets range from A5 (148 x 210mm) to A3 (297 x 420mm) and 31 x 100cm rolls. A single A5 sheet at £2.99 can fit one large patch or several smaller ones. There is no per-patch pricing - you pay for the sheet, and you decide how to use the space.
Do I need a heat press to apply iron-on patches?
No. A regular household iron works. Set it to around 150°C (medium heat), turn off steam, place parchment paper over the patch, and press firmly for 10-15 seconds per area. A heat press gives more consistent results across larger patches, but a household iron is perfectly fine for most sizes.
How are your patches different from iron-on transfer paper patches?
Iron-on transfer paper uses a home inkjet printer and produces patches that crack and fade after 5-10 washes. Our patches are professionally printed using DTF technology with CMYK + white ink, producing a soft, flexible patch that lasts 50+ washes. The colour accuracy, durability, and feel are in a different league.
Can I order just one patch?
