How to Remove Iron-On Transfer Residue from Your Iron
Transfer adhesive on your iron plate is a common problem when parchment paper slips during pressing or when pressing without a protective sheet. The residue is thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) adhesive, which is sticky when hot and hard when cool. Here is how to remove it without damaging your iron.
The Baking Soda Method
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a thick paste. Make sure the iron is completely cool and unplugged.
Apply the paste to the affected area of the iron plate with a cloth. Rub in circular motions with moderate pressure. The mild abrasive action of the baking soda breaks up the residue without scratching the soleplate.
Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Repeat if residue remains. This method works for most light-to-moderate residue buildup.
The Vinegar Method
Soak a cloth in white vinegar and lay it on the iron plate while the iron is cool. Leave for 10-15 minutes to soften the residue.
Heat the iron to a low setting (synthetic/nylon). The combination of mild acid and gentle heat softens the adhesive. Wipe with the vinegar-soaked cloth while warm (not hot). Be careful not to burn yourself.
For stubborn spots, add a pinch of salt to the vinegar cloth for gentle abrasion.
Commercial Iron Cleaner
Iron cleaning sticks (available from Lakeland, Amazon, or haberdashery shops) are designed specifically for this job. Heat the iron to medium, rub the cleaning stick across the soleplate, and wipe with a clean cloth.
These products are the fastest option for heavy residue buildup. Follow the product instructions, as methods vary by brand.
Prevention
Always use parchment paper or a Teflon pressing sheet between the iron and the transfer. This barrier prevents adhesive from touching the iron plate entirely.
If parchment paper slides around during pressing, tape it to the garment with masking tape at the edges.
Clean your iron plate after every pressing session, even if you used parchment paper. A quick wipe with a damp cloth while the iron is warm removes any trace residue before it builds up.
