The Fabric Limitation That Defines the Choice
Sublimation dye works through a chemical process. When heated, the solid dye turns directly into gas (skipping the liquid phase - hence "sublimation"), penetrates the surface of polyester fibres, and bonds permanently at a molecular level as it cools back to solid. The result is the best print quality in the garment decoration industry - zero texture, zero feel, colours that are literally inside the fabric.
But polyester is required. Cotton fibres do not have the molecular structure to accept sublimation dye. On a 50/50 cotton-poly blend, you get roughly half the colour vibrancy (the dye bonds to the poly fibres but not the cotton, creating a washed-out, heathered look). On 100% cotton, the image does not transfer at all.

All-over printing
