How to Design an Iron-On Transfer in Canva (Free)
Canva is a free online design tool that produces print-ready files for iron-on transfers. You do not need Photoshop, Illustrator, or any design experience. This guide walks through creating a design from scratch in Canva, setting the correct dimensions, using a transparent background, and exporting a high-resolution PNG ready to upload and order.
Setting Up the Canvas
Open Canva (canva.com) and click "Create a design", then "Custom size". Enter the dimensions in centimetres that match the transfer size you plan to order.
For an A5 transfer (chest logo): 14.8 x 21 cm. For an A4 transfer (full front/back print): 21 x 29.7 cm. Set the unit to centimetres.
Click "Create new design". The canvas opens with a white background. Before you start designing, delete the white background by clicking on it and pressing Delete, or by setting the background to transparent (available in Canva Pro, or you can export with transparency using the free plan trick described below).
Designing Your Transfer
Add text using the Text tool. For iron-on transfers, use bold, clear fonts. Thin fonts and very small text (under 5mm) may not reproduce clearly on fabric. Canva offers hundreds of free fonts.
Add images using the Elements panel. Search for illustrations, icons, and shapes. Many are free; some require Canva Pro. You can also upload your own images (logos, photos) using the Uploads panel.
Arrange your elements within the canvas area. Remember that the entire canvas area will be printed, so leave no empty space unless you want it. Only the design elements will print - the transparent background will not.
Export Settings
Click "Share" then "Download". Select PNG as the file type. Check the "Transparent background" box (this is critical - without it, you will get a white rectangle around your design). If transparent background is not available on the free plan, use a workaround: design on a bright green or blue background, then use a free online tool to remove that colour before uploading.
If available, set the size to the largest option or choose "PDF Print" quality and convert to PNG. The goal is at least 300 DPI at your target print size.
Save the file and upload it to our order page. Select the matching transfer size, and order.
Tips for Better Designs
Use high contrast: dark text on light garments, white or bright text on dark garments. Consider the fabric colour when choosing your design colours.
Keep it simple: the most effective garment designs use 1-3 elements. A logo, a name, or a short phrase. Cluttered designs look worse on fabric than on screen.
Check text size: zoom in to 100% on your Canva canvas. If the text looks small at this zoom level, it will be small on the garment. Minimum recommended text height is 8mm.
Use alignment guides: Canva shows alignment lines when elements are centred or equally spaced. Use these to keep your design balanced.
