Why Does My Iron-On Transfer Keep Peeling? 7 Fixes

Iron-on transfers peel for specific, fixable reasons. It is almost never a defective transfer - in nearly every case, the application technique is the issue. The adhesive did not activate properly, the fabric repelled the bond, or the aftercare damaged it. Here are the 7 most common causes and how to fix each one.

1. Not Enough Heat

The adhesive on DTF transfers activates at a specific temperature. If the iron or heat press is too cool, the adhesive softens but does not fully melt and bond with the fabric fibres. The transfer appears to stick initially but peels away after cooling or during the first wash.

Fix: use the correct temperature for your fabric (150-165°C for cotton, 145-150°C for polyester). If using a household iron, set it to the highest cotton/linen setting. Test on an inside seam first if you are unsure.

2. Not Enough Pressure

Pressure is just as important as heat. The adhesive needs to be pressed into the fabric fibres, not just melted on the surface. This is the single most common mistake with household irons.

Fix: press with your full body weight. Lean into the iron. Use a hard, flat surface (not an ironing board). If using a heat press, make sure the pressure is set to medium-firm. You should need noticeable effort to close the press.

3. Not Enough Time

Pressing for 5 seconds instead of 15 seconds means the adhesive does not reach full activation temperature throughout its thickness. The surface bonds but the core remains unmelted.

Fix: press for the full recommended time. Cotton: 12-15 seconds. Polyester: 8-10 seconds. Do not rush. Count slowly or use a timer.

4. Moisture in the Fabric

Damp or freshly washed fabric contains moisture that creates a steam barrier between the adhesive and the fibres. The transfer appears to bond but peels easily because the adhesive never made direct contact with the fabric.

Fix: pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds before placing the transfer. This drives out moisture and pre-heats the fabric. Make sure the steam function on your iron is turned off.

5. Wrong Fabric

Waterproof coatings, silicone-treated fabrics, and heavily starched garments repel the adhesive. The transfer sits on top of the coating rather than bonding with the fabric fibres. Nylon with DWR (durable water repellent) treatment is a common culprit.

Fix: check the fabric label. If the garment is water-resistant or has a visible coating on the surface, the transfer may not adhere. Test on an inconspicuous area first. Uncoated cotton, standard polyester, and denim work best.

6. Peeling the Film Too Soon

DTF transfers have a carrier film (the clear or white backing) that must be peeled after pressing. If you peel it while the adhesive is still hot and liquid, you pull the design away from the fabric.

Fix: wait 30 seconds after pressing for the transfer to cool. The adhesive sets as it cools. Peel slowly from one corner. If any part of the design lifts with the film, lay the film back down and re-press that area for 10 seconds.

7. Washing Too Soon or Too Hot

The adhesive needs 24 hours to fully cure after application. Washing the garment immediately can weaken the bond before it has set. Washing at high temperatures (60°C+) or with bleach can also break down the adhesive over time.

Fix: wait at least 24 hours before the first wash. Wash inside-out at 30°C. Avoid bleach and fabric softener. Hang dry or tumble dry on low heat.

Can I re-press a peeling transfer?

Sometimes. If the transfer is peeling at the edges but the centre is still bonded, re-press at the original temperature for 10-15 seconds. Focus pressure on the peeling areas. This works for transfers that were under-pressed the first time but will not fix transfers damaged by washing.

Why do the edges peel but the centre stays?

The edges of a transfer receive less pressure and heat than the centre, especially with a household iron. Re-press with focus on the edges, or do a full re-press followed by a 5-second edge-sealing press through parchment paper.

My transfer stuck to the parchment paper instead of the fabric. What happened?

You likely pressed with too much heat or peeled the carrier film before placing the parchment paper. The transfer should go: garment, transfer (film side up), parchment paper, iron. The carrier film is peeled first, then parchment is placed over the exposed design for the sealing press.

Do DTF transfers peel more than screen prints?

No. DTF transfers peel less than screen prints when applied correctly. The TPU adhesive bonds mechanically with fabric fibres, while screen print plastisol sits on the surface. Properly applied DTF transfers outlast screen prints on stretchy fabrics.

My polyester shirt scorched. Is the transfer the problem?

No. The fabric temperature was too high. Polyester scorches at 160°C+. Use 145-150°C for polyester and do not exceed 155°C. The scorch mark is fabric damage, not a transfer defect.
