Iron-On Transfers for Polyester

Polyester is the most common synthetic fabric in sportswear, workwear, and promotional clothing - and it is one of the trickiest fabrics for iron-on transfers. Too much heat and you scorch the fabric. Too little and the transfer peels off after the first wash. This guide covers the exact temperature, pressure, and dwell time that works, plus the mistakes that ruin polyester prints.

Why Polyester Is Different

Cotton can handle temperatures up to 200°C without damage. Polyester starts to soften at 160°C and will glaze, shrink, or melt above 170°C. That narrow window between "hot enough to bond the adhesive" and "hot enough to damage the fabric" is why polyester has a reputation for being difficult to print on.

DTF transfers solve this because the TPU adhesive activates at a lower temperature than screen printing plastisol or inkjet transfer paper adhesive. You get a strong bond at 145-150°C - safely below the damage threshold - without sacrificing durability or wash resistance.

If using a household iron, set it to the synthetic or medium setting. Press through parchment paper and keep the iron moving slightly to distribute heat evenly. Household irons are less precise than heat presses, so err on the lower side of the temperature range.

Common Polyester Mistakes

Scorching / shine marks

Caused by temperature above 155°C or pressing too long. The fabric develops a shiny, flattened appearance around the transfer. Always use parchment paper and keep below 150°C.

Dye migration / ghosting

Heat causes sublimation dyes in coloured polyester to migrate into the transfer, creating a yellow or pink tint. DTF transfers resist this better than most methods, but keeping temperature at 145°C and dwell time short minimises the risk.

Transfer peeling after wash

Usually means not enough heat or pressure was applied. The adhesive did not fully activate. Re-press at 150°C for 10 seconds with firm pressure. If using a household iron, lean your full body weight into it.

Fabric shrinkage

Thin polyester can shrink if heat is applied for too long. Keep dwell time to 8-10 seconds maximum. If you need a second press to seal edges, wait 30 seconds between presses to let the fabric cool.

Can you put iron-on transfers on polyester?

Yes. DTF (direct-to-film) transfers bond well to polyester because the adhesive is designed for synthetic fabrics. The key is temperature control - polyester has a lower heat tolerance than cotton, so you must stay at or below 150°C to avoid scorching, shine marks, or melting.

What temperature for iron-on transfers on polyester?

Use 145-150°C for 100% polyester. Do not exceed 155°C under any circumstances. If your iron does not show exact temperatures, use the synthetic or medium setting. A heat press with a digital display is more reliable than a household iron for polyester.

Will polyester melt under a heat press?
