All settings assume firm, even pressure through parchment paper or a Teflon sheet. After the initial press, peel the carrier film when cool and re-press for 5 seconds to seal the edges.
Tips for the Best Cotton Prints
Pre-press the garment
Give the cotton a 3-second pre-press before positioning the transfer. This removes moisture from the fibres and flattens any wrinkles, giving you a smoother surface and better bond.
Dark cotton, white ink base
DTF transfers include a white ink base layer under the colour. This means your design will be vibrant on black, navy, and dark cotton - unlike sublimation, which only works on white.
Avoid fabric softener
Fabric softener leaves a coating on cotton fibres that can reduce adhesion. If the garment has been washed with softener recently, give it a plain water wash before pressing.
Use a flat pressing surface
Place a firm, flat surface inside the garment - a pressing board, clipboard, or folded towel. This prevents front-to-back bleed-through and ensures even pressure across the design.

Is cotton the best fabric for iron-on transfers?
Cotton is widely considered the easiest and most reliable fabric for iron-on transfers. It tolerates high temperatures without damage, has a flat weave that provides good adhesion, and does not melt, shrink, or scorch at normal pressing temperatures. If you are new to iron-on transfers, cotton is the best fabric to start with.
What temperature for cotton iron-on transfers?
For standard cotton t-shirts and garments, use 150-165°C and press for 12-15 seconds with firm pressure. Lighter cottons (voile, lawn) need slightly less time (10 seconds). Heavier cottons (canvas, denim) can handle 160-165°C and may need 15 seconds for full adhesion.
Can I use a household iron on cotton?
Yes, and cotton is the easiest fabric to press with a household iron. Set your iron to the cotton setting (usually the highest), place parchment paper over the transfer, and press firmly for 15 seconds. Cotton handles heat well, so there is very little risk of damaging the fabric even if you press slightly too long.
Do cotton iron-on transfers crack after washing?
DTF transfers on cotton do not crack. The flexible TPU adhesive moves with the fabric rather than sitting rigidly on top. Wash inside-out at 30-40°C and hang dry or tumble dry on low. The print will last 50+ washes without cracking, peeling, or fading.
What about organic cotton?
Organic cotton works exactly the same as conventional cotton for iron-on transfers. The organic certification relates to how the cotton was grown and processed, not the fibre properties. Use the same temperature and press time as standard cotton.
Can I iron transfers onto cotton-polyester blends?
Yes, but treat the garment as polyester - use 150°C and do not exceed 155°C. The polyester content determines the safe temperature ceiling. A 50/50 or 65/35 cotton-poly blend is still easy to print on; you just need to respect the polyester component.
