Iron-On Transfers for Nylon
Nylon is the most heat-sensitive fabric you will commonly want to print on. It melts at lower temperatures than polyester, shrinks under sustained heat, and reacts badly to household irons set too high. But with the right settings, DTF transfers bond cleanly to nylon jackets, gym bags, sportswear, and accessories. This guide covers what works, what does not, and how to avoid ruining the fabric.

The rule of thumb: if the nylon surface feels soft and slightly textured, transfers will bond well. If the surface feels slick, glossy, or waxy, there is a coating that will block adhesion. When in doubt, test on an inconspicuous area or a scrap of the same material.
Application Tips for Nylon
Always use a pressing cloth
Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper between the heat source and the transfer. Direct contact with the iron plate can create hot spots that melt thin nylon.
Lower pressure than cotton
Nylon is thinner and more easily distorted. Use medium pressure - enough to make contact, not enough to stretch the fabric. On a heat press, reduce pressure by one turn from your cotton setting.
Cool peel only
Let the transfer cool completely before peeling the carrier film. Warm peeling on nylon risks pulling the adhesive away from the fabric because the bond is lighter than on cotton.
Skip the second press
On cotton, a second 5-second press helps seal edges. On nylon, the extra heat exposure is unnecessary and increases risk. If edges lift, lightly press just those spots at 140°C for 3 seconds through a pressing cloth.

Can you put iron-on transfers on nylon?
Yes, but nylon requires the lowest temperature of any common garment fabric. Nylon softens at around 150°C and can melt at 170°C, so you must use 140-145°C with a short dwell time. DTF transfers activate at this temperature range, making them one of the few transfer types that reliably bond to nylon.
What temperature for nylon iron-on transfers?
Use 140-145°C for standard nylon. Do not exceed 150°C. Press for 6-8 seconds with light to medium pressure. Nylon is thinner and more heat-sensitive than polyester, so shorter times and lower temperatures are critical. A heat press with a digital display is strongly recommended over a household iron.
Can I use a household iron on nylon?
It is possible but risky. Household irons do not maintain precise temperatures, and a brief spike above 150°C can damage nylon. If you must use a household iron, set it to the lowest or nylon setting, use a pressing cloth between the iron and transfer, and keep the iron moving. A heat press is the safer option.
Will transfers stick to waterproof nylon?
Transfers bond to the surface coating, not the nylon fibres directly. On lightly coated nylon (windbreakers, lightweight jackets), adhesion is usually good. On heavily coated or laminated waterproof nylon (rain jackets, dry bags), the transfer may not adhere well. Test on an inside seam first.
Can I print on nylon gym bags and backpacks?
Uncoated or lightly coated nylon bags work well. The firm, flat surface of a bag panel is easier to press than a garment. Place a board inside the bag for support and press at 140°C for 8 seconds. Heavily coated or ripstop nylon with a glossy finish may resist adhesion.
How durable are transfers on nylon?
On uncoated nylon, DTF transfers last 40+ washes. Nylon garments tend to be washed less frequently than cotton (jackets, bags), so practical lifespan is very long. Wash inside-out at 30°C and hang dry. Avoid tumble drying nylon as the heat can affect both the fabric and the transfer.
