Can You Put Iron-On Transfers on Polyester?
Yes, you can put iron-on transfers on polyester. DTF transfers bond well to polyester at 145-150°C. The key challenge is temperature control - polyester softens at 160°C and can melt at 170°C, leaving a narrow window between "hot enough to activate the adhesive" and "hot enough to damage the fabric." Why Polyester Is Tricky
Polyester is a synthetic fibre with a lower melting point than natural fibres. Cotton can handle 200°C without damage. Polyester begins to soften and glaze at 160°C. This means you have roughly a 10-degree window (145-155°C) where the transfer adhesive activates properly without damaging the fabric.
The second challenge is dye migration. Heat causes the sublimation dyes used in some polyester fabrics to release from the fibres and migrate into the transfer adhesive. This shows up as a yellow, pink, or orange tint bleeding through the print, especially on red, maroon, and bright-coloured polyester. Lower temperatures and shorter press times minimise this risk.
Correct Settings
Temperature: 145-150°C. Never exceed 155°C. If using a household iron, use the synthetic or medium setting.
Dwell time: 8-10 seconds. Shorter than cotton because polyester absorbs heat faster (thinner fabric, synthetic fibres conduct heat more efficiently).
Pressure: medium. Polyester garments are typically thinner than cotton, so you need less pressure to achieve good contact. On a heat press, reduce pressure by one setting from your cotton preset.
Cooling: let the transfer cool for 30 seconds before peeling. Polyester retains heat longer than cotton, so the adhesive takes slightly longer to set.
Common Polyester Garments
Polyester is everywhere in modern clothing. Sportswear (running vests, football shirts, gym tops) is almost always polyester. Workwear polo shirts are frequently 100% polyester or poly-cotton blend. Promotional t-shirts from events and conferences are typically cheap polyester. Hi-vis vests and jackets are polyester.
All of these work with DTF transfers at the settings above. The transfers flex with stretchy polyester sportswear and survive the regular washing that workwear requires.
Avoiding Problems
Test on an inside seam first if you are unsure about the fabric composition or dye stability. Press a small corner of the transfer onto the inside seam for 8 seconds, peel, and check for scorching or dye migration.
Always use a pressing cloth or parchment paper between the heat source and the transfer. This distributes heat more evenly and provides an extra buffer against hot spots.
Pre-press the garment for 3 seconds to drive out moisture. Polyester does not absorb much moisture, but any dampness from storage or recent washing can interfere with adhesion.
Avoid re-pressing more than once. Each additional heat exposure increases the cumulative risk of dye migration and fabric damage. Get it right the first time by using the correct settings.
