Best Fabric for Iron-On Transfers: A Complete Ranking
Not all fabrics accept iron-on transfers equally. Cotton is the easiest and most reliable. Canvas and denim are excellent because of their dense weave. Polyester works well with careful temperature control. Nylon is the trickiest common fabric. Silk, wool, and coated fabrics are generally not suitable. Here are common fabrics ranked for iron-on transfer success.
The Rankings
Tier 1 - Excellent: Cotton (all weights), canvas, denim. These fabrics handle high heat, have dense weaves for strong adhesion, and produce the sharpest prints. If you are new to iron-on transfers, start with one of these.
Tier 2 - Good: Polyester, poly-cotton blends, acrylic. These work well with careful temperature control (stay below 155°C). Polyester sportswear, workwear polos, and promotional t-shirts all fall into this category.
Tier 3 - Workable: Nylon (uncoated), linen, bamboo fabric. These require specific handling. Nylon needs low temperature (140-145°C). Linen has a textured weave that can affect fine detail. Bamboo fabric behaves like cotton but is thinner.
Tier 4 - Not recommended: Silk, wool, leather, coated nylon, waterproof fabrics. The heat required to activate the adhesive will damage silk and wool. Leather and coated fabrics resist the adhesive bond. These fabrics should not be used with iron-on transfers.
What Makes a Good Fabric
Three properties determine how well a fabric accepts iron-on transfers.
Heat tolerance: The fabric must withstand 140-165°C without damage. Cotton handles 200°C+. Polyester is safe to 155°C. Silk burns at 150°C. Higher heat tolerance gives you more margin for error.
Weave density: Tight, flat weaves provide more surface area for the adhesive to grip. Jersey knit (t-shirts), pique (polo shirts), and plain weave (canvas, cotton) all work well. Loose weaves, mesh, and heavily textured knits reduce adhesion.
Surface coating: Any coating on the fabric surface (waterproofing, starch, sizing, silicone) creates a barrier between the adhesive and the fibres. Uncoated fabrics bond best. Pre-washed garments from most retailers have had any sizing removed and are ready to press.
Fabric-Specific Tips
Cotton: pre-press for 3 seconds to remove moisture. Use 150-165°C. The most forgiving fabric for beginners.
Polyester: never exceed 155°C. Use a pressing cloth. Check for dye migration (colour bleeding) on brightly coloured polyester by testing an inside seam.
Denim: pre-press thick denim for 5 seconds. Work around rivets and hardware. Use bold fonts - fine text gets lost in the twill weave.
Canvas: insert cardboard inside bags and pouches. Canvas absorbs heat slowly, so give it the full 15 seconds.
Nylon: use a pressing cloth, reduce pressure, and keep dwell time to 6-8 seconds. Cool peel only. Test coated nylon before committing.
Blends: always treat a blended fabric as the more heat-sensitive component. A 50/50 cotton-poly blend gets the polyester temperature (150°C), not the cotton temperature.
