How to Iron On a Transfer on a Hoodie: Step by Step

Hoodies are thicker than t-shirts, which means they need slightly different application technique. The main considerations are: the thick fleece lining absorbs more heat, you need a firm pressing surface inside the hoodie, and you may need a longer press time. Here is the exact process from start to finish.

Prepare the Hoodie

Lay the hoodie flat on a hard surface (table or worktop, not an ironing board). Unzip it fully if it has a front zip. Fold the hood back out of the way.

Place a folded towel, pressing pillow, or piece of thick cardboard inside the hoodie between the front and back panels. This does two things: it creates a firm pressing surface (the fleece lining is soft and springy without it), and it prevents the adhesive from bonding the front panel to the back panel through the fabric.

Pre-press the area where the transfer will go for 3-5 seconds. This drives moisture out of the thick fleece and pre-heats the fabric. Hoodies hold more moisture in their fibres than t-shirts, so this step matters more.

Position and Press

Place the transfer design-side-down on the hoodie. For a centre chest placement, measure from the collar seam and from both side seams to centre it. For a centre back placement, fold the hoodie in half temporarily to find the centre line.

Cover with parchment paper. Press at 150-160°C for cotton fleece or 150°C for polyester fleece. Press for 12-15 seconds with firm pressure. The thicker fabric needs slightly longer than a t-shirt to allow heat to penetrate fully.

If using a household iron and the design is larger than the iron plate, work in sections. Press the centre first, then reposition to cover the left and right edges. Each section gets the full 12-15 seconds.

Peel and Seal

Wait 30 seconds for the transfer to cool. Peel the carrier film slowly from one corner. If any part lifts, lay the film back down and re-press that area.

After peeling, place parchment paper over the exposed design and re-press for 5 seconds. This sealing press is especially important on hoodies because the thick, springy fabric can cause edges to lift slightly during the first press. The second press locks them down.

Remove the cardboard or towel from inside the hoodie. Check the adhesion by gently stretching the fabric around the design. If edges lift, press them again through parchment paper.

Hoodie-Specific Tips

Avoid printing over the front pocket. The pocket creates a double layer of fabric plus a seam, which makes even pressure difficult. Position the design above or below the pocket instead.

For zip-up hoodies, do not press over the zip teeth. Position the design to clear the zip by at least 2cm on each side.

Hoodie strings should be removed or tucked inside before pressing. A metal or plastic string tip under the iron will damage both the transfer and the aglet.

The back panel of a hoodie is the easiest surface to print on. It is flat, has no obstructions, and offers the largest print area (25-35cm wide, 30-40cm tall).
