Selling on Etsy with Custom Iron-On Transfers
Etsy is the largest marketplace for handmade and custom items, and personalised t-shirts and tote bags are consistently among the top-selling categories. DTF transfers let you start an Etsy print business with almost no upfront investment - no screen printing equipment, no Cricut machine, no heat press required (a household iron works). Here is how to set up, price, and scale a custom garment business on Etsy using iron-on transfers.
The Business Model
The core idea: list custom t-shirts or tote bags on Etsy. When an order comes in, order a DTF transfer from us, press it onto a blank garment, and ship to the customer. You hold no inventory of printed garments - only blank stock.
Startup costs are minimal. Blank t-shirts: £2-5 each. DTF transfers: from £1.99 each. Etsy listing fee: £0.16 per listing. Etsy transaction fee: 6.5% of the sale price. Packaging and postage: £2-4 per order. A household iron works for pressing.
Selling price for a custom t-shirt on Etsy: typically £15-25. Selling price for a custom tote bag: £10-18. At these prices, your profit margin is £5-12 per item after all costs.
Getting Started
Create your designs first. Use Canva (free) to make 5-10 initial designs. Focus on a niche: dog breeds, occupations, hobbies, local areas, or seasonal themes. Niche designs sell better on Etsy than generic ones.
Source blank garments. Fruit of the Loom and Gildan offer bulk blanks at £2-5 per t-shirt through workwear suppliers like Clothes2Order or PrintedShirtShop. Keep 10-20 blanks in the most popular sizes (M, L, XL) and order more as needed.
List on Etsy with mockup images. Use free t-shirt mockup generators (Placeit, Smartmockups) to show your design on a garment without printing a sample. Write clear descriptions including fabric type, care instructions, and sizing.
Fulfilling Orders
When an order comes in, upload the design to our site and order a DTF transfer. We dispatch within 1-2 business days. When the transfer arrives, press it onto a blank garment and ship to the customer.
Total turnaround: 3-5 business days from order to customer delivery. Set your Etsy processing time to 3-5 days to manage expectations.
For personalised orders (custom names, specific text), you will need to adjust the design for each order. Canva makes this fast - change the text, export, upload, order.
Scaling Up
As orders increase, consider investing in a heat press (£80-150) for faster, more consistent pressing. A heat press pays for itself after about 20-30 orders compared to the time saved over a household iron.
Use our gang sheet tool to fit multiple designs on one sheet. If you have 5 orders of similar size, gang them together on one A3 or A2 sheet to reduce per-unit transfer cost.
Build a library of proven designs. Track which designs sell and double down on those themes. Seasonal designs (Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day) should be listed 4-6 weeks before the event.
Consider expanding to tote bags, hoodies, and aprons as you grow. The process is identical, and offering multiple product types increases your Etsy shop visibility.
