Application Tips for Hats and Caps

Hats are trickier than flat garments because of their curved surfaces, stiff brims, and limited pressing area. Here is what works best for each hat type.

Baseball caps & snapbacks

Stuff the cap with a rolled towel to create a firm dome shape. A heat press with a hat attachment is ideal - it wraps around the curve. With a household iron, press the centre first, then work outward in sections. Use 150°C for cotton, 145°C for polyester. Press each section for 8-10 seconds.

Beanies & knit hats

Place a pressing board or cardboard inside the beanie to create a flat surface. Cotton and acrylic beanies work well at 150°C. Keep the design small (5-8cm) since beanies stretch during wear. Avoid wool beanies - the heat can felt the fibres.

Bucket hats

The flat crown panel of a bucket hat is easier to press than a curved baseball cap. Stuff with a towel, press at 150°C for 12 seconds. Cotton bucket hats give the best results.

Flat-panel / 5-panel caps

The flat front panel of a 5-panel cap is the easiest cap style to press. Lay the panel flat with padding behind it and press normally. 150°C, 10-12 seconds.

Can you iron transfers onto baseball caps?

Yes, but a heat press with a curved/hat platen is strongly recommended over a household iron. Baseball caps have a curved front panel that makes it difficult to apply even pressure with a flat iron. If you only have a household iron, press in small sections, working from the centre outward, and check adhesion carefully at the edges.

What types of hats work with iron-on transfers?

Cotton baseball caps, cotton-twill snapbacks, cotton beanies, bucket hats, and flat-panel trucker caps all work well. Polyester mesh panels (the back of trucker caps) can work but require lower temperature (140-145°C). Wool beanies and felt hats are not recommended - the heat can damage the fibres.

What temperature for hat transfers?

For cotton caps: 150-155°C for 10-12 seconds. For polyester or poly-blend caps: 145-150°C for 8-10 seconds. Hats have less fabric to absorb heat, so err on the lower side of the temperature range and check adhesion before finishing.

How big should a logo be on a cap?

Standard cap logos are 5-8cm tall and 8-12cm wide for the front panel. The usable space on a structured baseball cap front panel is roughly 6cm tall by 12cm wide. For side logos, keep to 3-5cm tall. Measure your specific cap before ordering, as panel sizes vary by brand.

Can I use a household iron for cap transfers?

It is possible but challenging. The curved surface of a cap does not sit flat under an iron. Stuff the cap with a rolled towel to create a firm pressing surface and press in small sections. Results are more consistent with a heat press that has a hat attachment or a small flat press. For a one-off project, a household iron will work with patience.
